When I was a young girl around maybe 12 years old my second family who lived up the street several houses away, where I spent a lot of time at that time in my life. They lived in a little red cottage and were a Italian family. Phyllis was ma's name. The mother of the house my second mom. There was Frank, Jack, Nancy, Marie and little Phyllis course they were all older than me. Marie was way gone out of the house Nancy too.. Lit Phyllis was too. Only Frank and Jack remained with Ma. And Lit Phyllis's first born son out of wedlock. John. He was several years younger than me. Well I remember Frank he started his own business cleaning out basements. And he liked it a lot he would always come with some nice things. My dad worked at the time for the American can company and had been for years probably since I was a baby cause he was in the Navy before. Mama said when the boys were born he wasn't there he had been over in Japan. And I think he came home when I was born because I remember mama saying they couldn't decide what to name me. She said Rebecca, my grandmother said no Rebecca of sunny brook farm no. Dad said Jan and mama said no So I ended up Janice Louise... Mama was Lois Louise... Anyways dad took a interest in Franks business... And he asked him about it and before I knew it he had bought a truck made flyers and we had to go around the neighborhood putting them in mail boxes.. Then he got a huge dump truck and another truck and so on.. His business grew. That's when my love of Vintage Victorian etc.. Started growing in my life. When the trucks would come in he'd say boy theres some nice things out there and mama and I would go look through it. And yes we'd find great things.. Frank within a years or so died in a fire upstairs in the house, the little red cottage had two bedrooms on top one on each side and Frank stayed in one side and Jack in the other side. See Frank was a alcohlic I think Before the fire I might had seen him on a binge once before. Don't quite remember. He was a binge drinker. It was horribly sad. He was on a binge and smoking in the bed and he fell sleep with a cigarette in his hand, the bed caught on fire. A friend tried to save him and couldn't the fire got to big. It was such a sad thing. He was such a great man otherwise. He always took us kids ice skating to the park, store. I think I was around fifthteen and it was a horrible time. I left home by 16 and a half because you see dad became a alcoholic as well. Years later he stopped for around ten or more. And after I married I worked for him. As he receptionist/secretary, book keeper driver you name it. I had access to many items that came in. And one of them was this pretty Victorian depression glass not knowing at the time what it was by name just knowing it was old and there were several boxes of it packed up. So I drugged it off the truck into the house. I had stored it up on the attic for years. I didn't have a place for it at the time. The place I lived I had to use the dinning room as a bed room I was married and had five children... And I was busy working dad and doing for them and me and my family as well...
In the boxes were several teacups and saucers...
Lovely oval serving bowls...
And only one of these, I call it a rootbeer float glass.. I just recently found a second one at $14.00 dollars I was shocked because their more like 30 and up... A piece.. There was only one of these in the pieces I had found from dad's truck...
I have some small tumblers and cereal bowls and salad plates. Serving bowls a large salad round bowl and a couple of platters two sets of salt and pepper shakers... But no dinner plates, im not sure if they were there on the truck or not. Sometimes the truck would be so full to the top it was hard to see if you passed through everything...
Also a creamer and sugar set... A set of desert cups. Over the years I found them on line and discovered there name. Which is the Sharon cabbage rose pattern. I have been fascinated with Victorian depression glass since 13 when I first had a job cleaning our neighbor's David house he was well 70 years old maybe more. He lived in this house with his mama and she had way since passed on when I was a little girl and he remained till his death. . . It started with me cleaning his mama's yellow and purple depression glass and there was like a turquoise green swirl bowl. Which I ended up with. I was suppose to recieve some other things but instead my uncles wife who lived downstairs took them. I was so upset because she'd barely been in the family.. Stinker... So that's were I got many of my belonging off dad's trucks.. Boy were those the days... Truck full of things of the pass that no one wanted they didn't care at the least.. I even found money, jewlery I have till this day a ring from the 1800's 18 karat gold with two square dianmonds on the side and the middle stone was missing so dad said if mama didn't want it it was mind even though I had did the searching that day and if I didn't it would had went to the dumps.... Mama said she didn't want it so I took it to the jewlers and had my birthstone put in the middle.. Another time in a kitchen when cleaning the whole house out. In the ole metal tins I found rolls and rolls of 2o dollars bills some hundred just in rolls and rolls inside.... There are so many stories finding money and things.. Those were some good times.... You just never knew what you would find. Sometimes it was just one thing and there were times where there was nothing and those days were there were so many things.. From crocheted gloves to vintage dishes lamps clothes just different things... Digging in those trucks, I sure miss them days there was nothin like it...
Now for some old Victoria books...

Hi Janice, from the shape of your teapot, I would venture to say the handle should have been poured solid with clay in the manufacturing process. Sometimes if the handle is poured thin and a bit hollow---and then the hot water works its way up into the crevice that is still open. I recommend you never use this pot in the microwave, because unless the glaze has adequately sealed the crevice the handle will retain moisture and possibly crack or worse in the microwave due to the water expanding with heat.
ReplyDeleteOther than that the teapot should serve quite well, but will require a hot-pad, or a tea handle cozy. A double thickness of one of your crocheted small pot holders will work nicely. Enjoy it, it is adorable...and not a really a flaw in mass production, but it has it's own personality. If you do see an unglazed surface inside by the handle, by all means exchange it.
